One bag of organic skills please- Where can I find them?
If skills were bags of crisps they would
1. Grow on trees like leaves and
2. Would be my favourite flavour, Walkers cheese and onion
How organic are your skills?
I heard the term organic today in reference to skills – “my skills happen organically” was the phrase I heard from a friend. At first I was slightly annoyed as organic sounds like a safe term for regulated food. But in the thesaurus, you’ll find words such as
• Natural built
• Inherent
• Intrinsic
• Fabric
• structure
• environmentally friendly
My understanding was that organic was better quality. So my friend‘s definition was right. But why do we need a word to differentiate what type of skills we have if we are born with them.
Looking for skills in the wrong places
People spend an entire lifetime looking for skills or trying to improve them. Transferable-skills, soft-skills, life-skills. I’m truly heartbroken when people tell me they really don’t believe they have a purpose in life or don’t know what they’re supposed to do with their skills or even that they have no skills at all.
Can you imagine, the creator of a Mercedes car coming back to see his creation for the first time in a show room and sees the tittle Mini cooper( given by a car sales person) under his work. It has been taken out for several test drives but has been given the lower grade fuel, oil, tires and service usually given to the Mini Cooper. So now the Mercedes car clearly believes, it is a Cooper. Mercedes Benz car says to his creator“I don’t really like the beautiful ensemble that you gave me, I need a better engine, I think you should have made me much smaller like the Mini Cooper over there.”
If you were the creator or manufacturer, I’m sure you’d be confused. But the truth is, skills don’t grow on trees, nor are they returnable. You can’t make a complaint and try to upgrade yourself if you were born that way.
IMAGINE if you were a car, which car would you be, and how would you drive? I’m sure if you were a car your manufacturer would have wanted you to be completely organic, he wouldn’t ask for your opinion or for you to be something completely different. You couldn’t transform even if you really wanted to. This is not an episode of Transformers. I can just about see how heartbroken the manufacturer would be to know that its grandest most amazing piece has contracted “what’s my function” disorder?
Upgrade you say?
Why do we feel the need to upgrade, trying to fit in like “everybody else”? You think you need to fit the norm? When you were a kid, you knew you wanted to be a fireman, or some such thing, and no one should stop that. So why as adults do we seem to lose the vision we had of ourselves? It feels as though you’ve been trying to be every other ordinary, run of the mill, working vehicle, or make of car that you’ve seen on the road, not the great super sport Lamborghini you were born to be.
Some cars are flash, others are plain. Some are fast, others meander. Some are small, others are over-sized. Some are luxurious, others are working vehicles. Don’t try to be what you are not made to be, you’ll kill yourself trying. The truth is not everybody can be an F1 McLaren, but not everyone should be a Ford Mondeo either.
Selfishly keeping it to yourself
Have you heard this poem from the Book: Return to love “Our Deepest Fears”originally read by Nelson Mandela and written by Marianne Williamson – (I have taken only the most important verses you can read the rest)
“Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. “
“Your playing small does not serve the world.”
Do you realise that every time someone decides not to express themselves using their organic skills, they deprive the whole world of something amazing, a world without Richard Branson’s Virgin, Christian Dior, Gap, Thomas Edison, and Usain Bolt. Why would you want to do that. So today when you go out and decide to be someone you’re not and walk in someone else’s shadow, remember the less of yourself you try to be, the more you deprive me and the world of the amazing gift you have inside of you.
Use the skills don’t upgrade. You’re a Lamborghini ,not a………. Golf.
